Fish diseases are prevalent everywhere and they can disrupt production in an instant. It's important that we discover which disease(s) are present, how to maintain control, and how to effectively protect fish from future exposure.

3 Pillars of Disease Management

  • Identify
  • Control
  • Protect

Identify

Identify which disease(s) are present in your farm by conducting lab tests on your fish samples. This can be performed by your local vet or an MSD Animal Health representative.

Control

Control the disease by implementing good farm management practices and biosecurity protocols, to ensure cleaner and healthier fish.

Protect

Protect your healthy fish by strategically adopting vaccination at the correct timing under specific conditions.

Aquatic diseases pose a serious threat to the farmed-fish industry. Infected populations can cause harvests to dwindle, resulting in significant losses for producers. Some of the most common diseases amongst farmed tilapia are Iridovirus and Streptococcus spp.

Iridovirus

Caused by the Megalocytivirus, this virus can cause lethargy, anorexia, and other clinical symptoms in tilapia.

Streptococcus

Two key species are responsible for significant losses in tilapia: Streptococcus agalactiae & Streptococcus iniae.
